Life Insurance with Bad Credit, CCJs or Health Issues — Specialist Advice
Most people assume that bad credit, a CCJ, an IVA, a DMP or a pre-existing medical condition means they cannot get life insurance — or that the premiums will be unaffordable. That is almost never true.
Darryl Dhoffer is an independent, whole-of-market protection adviser who arranges life insurance every day for people with complex credit histories and health conditions. He has access to policies from across the UK market — including specialist insurers that mainstream comparison sites do not show — and because he also arranges your mortgage, your protection is designed around your full financial picture from day one.
The initial consultation and quote are completely free. No obligation. No pressure.
⚖️ Can I Get Life Insurance with Bad Credit?
Your credit history does not affect most life insurance applications. Unlike mortgages, life insurers assess health risk, not financial risk. A CCJ, default, IVA or DMP on your credit file has no bearing on your life insurance eligibility or premium in the vast majority of cases.
The exception is whole of life policies used as loan security — some lenders check credit in this context. But for standard life insurance to protect your mortgage or your family, your credit history is irrelevant.
What matters to a life insurer is your age, health, smoking status, occupation and the amount of cover you need. Nothing else.
🏥 Life Insurance with Pre-Existing Medical Conditions
❤️
Heart Conditions
Previous heart attack, angina or stent? Many insurers still offer cover — often with a premium loading. Darryl knows which insurers are most competitive for cardiac histories.
🩺
Diabetes
Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are commonly covered. The premium depends on your HbA1c levels and how well-controlled your condition is. Some specialist insurers are significantly cheaper than others.
🧠
Mental Health History
Depression, anxiety or stress — even with past episodes — does not automatically prevent cover. Many insurers treat mental health history sympathetically, especially if you are now well.
🦋
Cancer History
Depending on cancer type, stage and time since treatment, cover may still be available. Some specialist insurers consider applications from cancer survivors — Darryl knows who they are.
🫁
Respiratory Conditions
Asthma, COPD and other respiratory conditions are regularly covered, often at standard rates for mild or well-controlled cases.
🦴
Other Conditions
MS, epilepsy, kidney disease, liver conditions, stroke history — Darryl assesses each case individually and knows which specialist insurers consider applications others decline.
🏠 Life Insurance Alongside a Bad Credit Mortgage
When Darryl arranges a bad credit mortgage for you, he reviews your protection needs as part of the same conversation. This matters because bad credit mortgage clients are often the most underinsured people in the UK — they have been focused on solving the mortgage problem and have not thought about what happens to the mortgage if they die or cannot work.
If you have a CCJ, IVA or DMP and have just secured a mortgage through a specialist lender at a higher rate, the last thing your family needs is to lose their home because you were not insured. A decreasing term life insurance policy matched to your mortgage balance typically costs £10-£30 per month — less than a Netflix subscription.
Darryl arranges both. One conversation. Everything coordinated.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Does a CCJ affect life insurance? ›
No. A CCJ on your credit file has no impact on a standard life insurance application. Life insurers assess health risk, not financial risk. Your credit history is not checked when you apply for life insurance to protect your mortgage or your family. The premium is based on your age, health, smoking status and the amount of cover you need — nothing else.
Can I get life insurance with an IVA or DMP? ›
Yes — an IVA or Debt Management Plan does not affect your eligibility for life insurance in most cases. Life insurers do not check credit files for standard residential protection policies. If you are arranging a mortgage through Darryl, he will discuss life insurance cover as part of the same conversation to ensure your family is protected.
Can I get life insurance with a pre-existing medical condition? ›
Yes — many insurers cover people with pre-existing conditions including heart disease, diabetes, cancer history, mental health conditions, and respiratory conditions. The terms vary by insurer and condition. Some specialist insurers offer significantly better rates than others for specific health histories. Darryl knows which insurer is right for your specific situation.
Do I need life insurance if I have a bad credit mortgage? ›
Yes — and it is especially important. Bad credit mortgage clients often pay higher rates on their mortgage, which means the financial impact of dying without cover is even more severe. If you die without life insurance, your family could be left unable to pay a higher-rate specialist mortgage and potentially lose their home. A decreasing term policy matched to your mortgage typically costs £10-£30 per month. Darryl arranges both the mortgage and the protection in one conversation.
How much does life insurance cost in the UK? ›
For a healthy non-smoker, life insurance starts from around £8 per month for a 30-year-old wanting £200,000 cover over 25 years. Premiums increase with age, smoking status and health conditions. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, premiums may be loaded but cover is usually still available. Darryl compares the whole market to find you the most competitive rate for your specific circumstances.
What is the difference between level and decreasing term life insurance? ›
Level term pays the same fixed amount throughout the policy — useful for interest-only mortgages or family income replacement. Decreasing term reduces over time in line with your mortgage balance — cheaper and specifically designed for capital repayment mortgages. Most bad credit mortgage clients choose decreasing term to protect the mortgage at minimum cost. Darryl will explain which is right for your situation and budget.
Is life insurance tax free in the UK? ›
The payout from a life insurance policy is usually free from income tax and capital gains tax. However, it may be subject to inheritance tax if paid into your estate. Placing your policy in trust avoids this — Darryl can advise on trust arrangements as part of your protection review, ensuring the payout reaches your family quickly and tax-free.
What is critical illness cover and do I need it? ›
Critical illness cover pays a lump sum if you are diagnosed with a specified serious illness — typically cancer, heart attack, stroke, and around 40-50 other conditions depending on the insurer. Unlike life insurance, you do not have to die to claim — you just have to be diagnosed. Many people combine life insurance with critical illness cover so they are protected whether they die or become seriously ill. Darryl will explain whether critical illness cover makes sense for your situation.
What is income protection insurance? ›
Income protection pays a monthly income if you cannot work due to illness or injury. Unlike life insurance or critical illness, it does not pay a lump sum — it replaces your monthly income until you either return to work or retire. It is particularly important for self-employed clients and those without employer sick pay. Darryl considers income protection for all clients, especially those who have taken a mortgage on specialist terms where keeping up repayments is critical.
