How Long After Bankruptcy Can I Get a Mortgage?

There is no mandatory minimum period to wait after bankruptcy before applying for a mortgage. However the timing matters enormously — your options at 1 year post-discharge are very different from 3 or 6 years.
🏦 What Lenders Look At
- Bankruptcy must be discharged
- Time since discharge — 1, 3 and 6 year points are key thresholds
- Completely clean credit since discharge
- Deposit size — larger deposits compensate for more recent bankruptcy
- Stable income and employment since discharge
❓ Common Questions
Can I get a mortgage 1 year after bankruptcy?
It is possible but options are very limited. Very few specialist lenders will consider an application within 12 months of discharge and those that do require a large deposit 25%+ and charge significantly higher rates.
Is 6 years after bankruptcy a fresh start?
In practical terms yes. Once the bankruptcy drops off your credit file mainstream lenders will not see it and you can apply as a standard applicant.
YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DO NOT KEEP UP YOUR REPAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE OR ANY OTHER LOAN SECURED AGAINST IT.
