⚠️ What Lenders Actually See

Bank underwriters are trained to identify gambling transactions. Common markers they look for: payments to Bet365, Paddy Power, William Hill, Coral, Ladbrokes, Betfair, Sky Bet, PokerStars, 888, Casumo and other betting/casino platforms. PayPal or bank transfer payments to gambling sites also flag up.

What they assess: frequency (occasional vs daily), amounts (small occasional bets vs significant sums), pattern (chasing losses, deposits followed by more deposits) and net position (are you losing money overall).

The most damaging pattern: frequent deposits, no or minimal withdrawals, escalating amounts. This signals problem gambling to a lender and most will decline.

❓ Common Questions

How far back do lenders look at bank statements?

Most lenders request the last 3 months of bank statements. Some request 6 months. A small number of lenders look back 12 months for larger loans. The most recent 3 months are the most scrutinised.

What if I have only had a few small bets?

Occasional small recreational bets — a few pounds on a football match for example — are unlikely to cause a decline at most lenders if the overall financial picture is strong. The concern is frequency, escalating amounts and patterns that suggest compulsive gambling.

Will I need to explain the gambling to the lender?

Yes — if gambling appears on your statements during the period reviewed, some lenders may ask for an explanation. Darryl will prepare you for this conversation and select lenders who are most likely to take a proportionate view of recreational gambling versus habitual betting.
